We had a great day today collaborating with others in the
United States to talk about Melonhead! Being in the global book club, "1Book, 1World", is a lot of fun! We had some catching up to do, so we started by reading Chapter 5 of Melonhead. Our friends in Wisconsin, Ms. Donlin's Class, has already finished Chapter 8! After lunch we had our first Today's Meet with Ms. Donlin's Class. They are also 2nd graders. We learned that they are liking the book as much as we are. They think that Melonhead is a crazy and funny character too.
Somebody told their class that we had snow this week. One of their students replied, "We got 27 inches of snow last week!". Wow, that would put us out of school for a month! We plan to Skype soon with Ms. Donlin's class.
Next, we had a Today's Meet with Katy Kelly, the author of Melonhead! This was the first Today's Meet that Katy had ever participated in! Can you believe that she took the time to chat with us? We're so lucky! We spent about 20 minutes talking to her about her books and being an author. We learned that
her first published book is Lucy Rose: The Thing About Me. Lucy Rose is a character in Melonhead. Katy said that her favorite thing to do is write stories that make children laugh. Well, our class agrees that she is very good at that! Katy got the idea for Melonhead as a character from having a melonhead brother and five melonheaded nephews. She also admitted to us that she, herself, is a melonhead. Several of us professed to being melonheads as
well! We have a connection to Katy, she has a daughter that lives in North Carolina! As we were about to say goodbye, Katy asked us if we wanted to play a game. Well, OF COURSE! We were so glad she wanted to spend more time with US! Her game was called "How to get a plot, characters and a setting in under 2 minutes?". She started by asking us to give her a name. We gave her the name Stuey. She continued asking us questions! We were fast and furiously coming up with ideas. At the end of the game, we had a complete story! We will work on editing and revising it next week. The game was a lot of fun and gave us a great strategy for writing stories! You can scan the QR code below to go to our Today's Meet conversation!
