Fascinating Mystery Skype . . .

I usually don't post about Mystery Skypes that we have with other states in the USA, I generally just update our Mystery Skype page. However, our Mystery Skype on Monday was extraordinary! First of all, figuring out the state was very confusing when we got down to the clues: located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, begins with a vowel, NOT Oregon. What could it be? When we asked if they were one of the "contiguous states", the response was NO. Well, that
The village makes a living in Alaska by fishing for
salmon, halibut, and grey cod.
only leaves one state, Alaska!!! One interesting fact that we learned was that the students don't live in a city, they live in a village called Nikolaevsk Village. To quote one of the students, "It's the best village in Alaska." The closest large city to the village is Anchorage, which is 200 miles away!!!! The school is a K-12 school with only 66 students. The population of Nikolaevsk Village is less than 400, wow! Our school is larger than their village! We learned that the students are raising fish in the school to put in the ocean in the spring. This is done to add fish for fishing. On the day of the Skype, they were having a warm rainy day of 40ยบ. The normal weather for this time of year is snow and single digit temperatures! We were fascinated by all that we learned and enjoyed telling them about our school.

Hmm . . . only one other "non contiguous" state! Do you know what that one is?
